November 2011

FIDS KIDS CARE

On November 3, students, parents and faculty met at the school for the first meeting of FIDS KIDS CARE.  We discussed our first outreach assisting the Joshua Heart Foundation on Saturday, December 10, 2011. Volunteers will meet at 14250 North Miami Avenue, a local church. The children who are volunteering will get hands on experience in packaging and distributing food to needy families.  If you cannot assist with the distribution, you can help by collecting non-persihable food items from Monday, November 28 to Friday, December 9.

All forms must be submitted to Sheila in order for your child to participate in KIDS CARE. All children participating will receive a FIDS KIDS CARE t-shirt and are requested to wear their shirt on the day of the outreach. Parents will provide transportation for their children.

A Spooktacular Halloween Party!!!

Our music teacher, Ms. Marybeth, wowed the parents with a Halloween production put on by the students before the festivities began!  We enjoyed a best decorated pumpkin contest, delicious snacks, a boo-tiful fashion show; and to complete the celebration a magician and a airigamist. This year's Halloween party was filled with lots of fun!  We would like to thank our hard working Halloween committee:
Anna Toress, DJ Kerr, Carmen Casadella, Cecilia Cohen, and Lordess Starr.

Special thanks to the following parents who were a great help on the day of the event: Bridjette Green, Fabiola Rogondino Carvallo, Bob Dunbar, Adam Mulroney and Selena Miles; and always a special thanks to Coach Durango and Genaro for all of their hard work and commitment to the children. All of you are appreciated!!

Congratulations to the class pumpkin contest winners:
1st place -  Senior Kindergarten
2nd place - 2nd and 3rd grades
3rd place - Junior Kindergarten

Thanksgiving Feast

FIDS Annual Thanksgiving Feast will be held on Monday, November 21, 2011, at 11:30 AM for toddlers and pre-kindergarten and a noon musical performance, followed by our Thankgiving feast for junior kindergarten - 5th grade.  Chef Richard Henry will be preparing the Thanksgiving turkey, gravy and stuffing, all parents are requested to provide a favorite side dish for the feast.  A sign-up sheet is available at the front desk or you may email Ms. Sheila Hosseini, shosseini@fids.org

Early Dismissal:  On Wednesday, November 23, 2011, school will be dismissed at 12:00 noon, with bus and van pick-up at 12:15 PM.  School will be closed on Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25, 2011, in observance of the Thankgiving holiday.

Golf Cart & Vehicular Procedures

Due to several instances of broken sprinkler heads and turf damage on the grounds of the Fisher Island Park, FICA has requested that parents cease using the parkland located to the north of the School for golf cart access and parking.  Commencing immediately, parents driving golf carts should use the School’s semi-circular driveway.

How empathy “happens” in the human brain

Why empathy is the foundation for morality

The connection between empathy and social media

What can we do to promote empathic behavior in our children?

Thought of the day

The Person I Long To Be

"The day light breaks again
Another day has begun.

But still no sleep has come.
My body is weary

My mind overworked.
I lie awake thinking

But what I am unsure.
I need to break free from the cycle I endure.

Everyday is the same and the nights are undistinguished.
I feel as though I am being pushed along with the tide

Unable to break free from the everyday flow.
This is not me I need to change, before time takes over

And I am unable to change.
I need to be freed from the grasp of ordinary

And become that person I have always longed for.
Express myself in every way, and conquer the dreams as I lie awake.

Then I may fall asleep and put my mind to rest.
Make changes in my life and help those in need.

I would like to touch everyone's life in a positive way
And leave my mark on society before I fade away."

Parent of the month

Anna Torres, is our parent of the month.  Mrs. Torres is the mother of fifth grader, Kiana Sein. She is very hands on and is always there to help.  Mrs. Torres has served as PTA co-chair and volunteered as a room mom.  She helped to start the Lemonade stand.  We are grateful to Anna and her family for the true dedication they have shown to the school.  It is exemplary......

We would like to give a special Thank You to a new parent, Selena Miles, she is the mother of first grader, Riley Miles.  Mrs. Selena assisted with the Halloween party.  She and Mr. Miles have jumped right in and they are serving as room parents for Riley's class.  We welcome the Miles family and look forward to their involvement in other events.
