Good Character Awards
Congratulations go to our Good Character Award recipients for the month of February: Dmitri Ferraro-Gavrikov, Junior Kindergarten (lower school), and Isabella Durango, Grade 3 (upper school). We are proud of Dmitri and Isabella for exemplifying FIDS’s three Rs: Respecting Others, Respecting Your Community, and Responsibility
I would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s FIDS Has Talent gala and charity auction a huge success. We are still crunching numbers, but at first blush, it appears this year’s gala was the biggest philanthropic success in FIDS’s thirteen-year history. Fundraising aside, the best takeaway of the evening was the strong sense of comradery among our FIDS community. It was a joyous culmination of the 2016-2017 school year to have our dedicated parents and exemplary faculty and staff share the joy of our collective and special school community at the annual gala.
Thanks go to our gala co-chairs—Ms. Anirays Camino and Ms. Evelyn MacKenzie—and our auction chairs—Ms. Linette Guerra, Ms. Anna Kudrin, and Ms. Darcy Towsley—for their indefatigable commitment of time and effort. I would personally like to acknowledge our parent and teacher performers for their bravery to take the stage and to give thanks for all the money they helped raise for our school community. In addition, the success of this year’s gala owes to the generosity of our premier sponsors, Hassan and Racha Kotob, and the many individuals who donated their time and money to support the effort. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge Ms. Mary Reiling, FIDS Director of Development, for her dedication to this endeavor.
Thank you for your support in making this, and every week at FIDS, a wonderful learning experience for our children. Your partnership is greatly appreciated.
As shared in my newsletter of August 5, 2016, FIDS has been proactive in its efforts to mitigate the spread of mosquitos on the school campus, with such efforts exceeding those of the South Florida community. In response to the outbreak of the Zika virus in South Florida, we have amplified our mitigation efforts as follows:
· Misting of the school’s perimeter and playground area
twice daily (at approximately 6:30 a.m. and
· Draining standing water daily whenever it is
· Keeping doors and windows closed to the degree
· Providing staff development on Zika to all faculty and
· Providing parents with the option for FIDS's staff to keep
their child indoors during lunch, P.E., and recess.
Additionally, you may want to consider the following:
· Long-sleeved shirt and pants uniform options, including
the new addition of the long sleeved, mesh polo dress
· Cover your child’s skin with light clothing, and apply
mosquito repellent prior to sending your child to school.
· Provide your child’s teacher with a bottle of your
preferred mosquito repellent, labeled with your child’s
name. This is only for the purpose of reapplication of
repellent. Parents are responsible for applying mosquito
repellent on their children prior to sending them to
· Keep informed of the latest research and advisories as
new information is unfolding daily.
NOTE: Please be advised that local and state health
authorities have not issued mandates to close schools
and/or restrict outside activities. With that in mind,
FIDS is open with the above outlined measures in place.
We will continue to keep you informed of our practices
as student safety is our top priority.
